The following are a few articles, forms, and other information that are useful for operators of Experimental Aircraft. We've tried to organize them into useful groups.

First, if you're flying a Jet or a High Performance Piston aircraft, you need to hold a Certificate with a Specific Rating allowing you to act as PIC in Make and Model. The following Information and Forms is designed to help:

(1): If you hold an existing LOA you can exchange it through the mail by following these instructions: Mail-Order LOA Exchange Instructions.

(2): If you are applying for an Exchanged or a New Certificate, you'll need to complete an FAA Form 8710-1 Application for Certificate.

(3) If you are taking a Flight Test, you'll want this: FAA Practical Test Standards.

(4): If you are taking a test with US, this is what our Examiner will use as his Plan of Action and you can see what he'll be using to keep track of the test in-flight with his Kneeboard Card for VFR Flight Test.

(5): If you are taking Instruction from an Independent Instructor, make sure that both you and he read the following, as it includes all of the required logbook endorsements that are needed, along with other Instructions for Instructors.

(6): Many of the questions associated with the new program can be answered by reading the following FAA Documents: FAA Order 8700-24 and FAA LOA Update.

Red Star Aviation is the Industry Leader in bringing the military concept of Operational Risk Management (ORM) to Civilian Flight Operations. We use the following information on every flight to help us identify and remediate the risks associated with our operations:

(1): Red Star Aviation ORM Standard Operating Procedures

(2) Red Star Aviation Preflight Briefing Guide

(3) Red Star Aviation ORM Risk Identification Matrix.

If you are buying an airplane, and need to move it to a new base of operations, you need to inform the new FSDO, send them a copy of the Approved Inspection Program (for jets), apply for an amendment to the Inspection Program changing the persons responsible for the records, send in a Program Letter, and then apply for a new Certificate of Airworthiness. Once you have the airplane rebased, you may also need to add events to your program letter. The following are example letters and downloadable FAA Forms that facilitate all of these activities.

(1): Sample Letter to FSDO for Aircraft REBASE.

(2): Sample revision to APPROVED INSPECTION PROGRAM (the revised pages will be different for every different program. If you want help with your particular program, feel free to contact us and we can prepare the revision for you).

(3): Sample PROGRAM LETTER.

(4): Sample PROGRAM LETTER AMENDMENT.

(5): Downloadable PDF files of the FAA APPLICATION FOR AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE.

(6): If you have live ejection seats, you do need to inform the Airport Management. Use this Ejection Seat Notification Letter.

(7): As of January 20, 2005, all aircraft operating in the higher flight levels will need to be able to comply with Domestic Reduced Vertical Separation Minimums (DRVSM). No Classic Jets are likely to be approved. Read the RVSM ARTICLE to see why.

(8): A little known fact is that you cannot conduct flight training in ANY Jet unless you are on an IFR Flight Plan, as per the TSA. You can obtain a waiver from that requirement by applying for the TSA Training Waiver which is good for one year.

If you want to fly in your airplane to a Military Airfield for any reason (an airshow or other event), you need to fill out three forms:

(1): DOD Form 2400

(2): DOD Form 2401

(3): DOD Form 2402

There are also the following Instructions associated with these:

(1): Instructions for Hold Harmless

(2): Instructions for Civil Landing Permit

(3): Minimum Insurance Required

(4): Instructions for Insurance

There are a few areas where the FAA has Produced Advisory Circulars that are of interest to Warbird Owners. We've selected a few for our Library:

(1): Stall/Spin Awareness

(2): Positive Exchange of Flight Controls

(3): Military Surplus Parts

(4): Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS)

(5): To go with the ASRS Advisory Circular, you might also want to download a copy of the NASA Form for Pilots that allows you to participate in the ASRS program. It's also a well kept secret that Aviation Maintenance Technicians can participate in the ASRS for Mechanics program in case they identify an unsafe condition.

(6): The FAA hopes to deal with some Human Factors Issues by having pilots read the information on Hazardous Aviation Attitudes

Lastly, Red Star Aviation performs Accident and Mishap Investigation upon request. The following is a sample of the type of investigation and reporting that we routinely perform for operators. This article was done at the request of an individual who was involved with the investigation of a Yak mishap. The report was included in the final NTSB report on the mishap. If you are interested in any other similar forensic examination or flight test investigations, please feel free to contact us.
