T-28

The North American T-28 is one of the most popular piston engine Warbirds in the USA, and also the one that we do the most work with for Experimental Aircraft Authorizations, as unlike a Yak-52 or most P-51 Mustangs (which are flown under Restricted Category, and are thus exempt from rating requirements) it does require a pilot rating.

The T-28 is a complex aircraft, typified in training by the need for the pilot to understand EXACTLY how to manage its engine. If mishandled by the pilot, these engines can last for mere minutes, rather than the many hundreds of hours that they ought to last. For this reason, all of our flight test work in the T-28 series is done with EXTREME care to manage the powerplant correctly at all times.

The T-28 has excellent flying qualities, adequate power, and produces pretty impressive performance numbers. It is big, roomy, comfortable, and has loads of ramp presence. We enjoy flying them, and especially enjoy giving flight tests in these wonderful old aircraft to new operators. We work closely with Instructors to ensure that their methods of powerplant management are adhered to at all times, and we never contradict the methods that have been proven to work. While we do not at present maintain a T-28 of our own (We ARE looking for one!), we do provide initial and recurrent flight instruction in them as well as giving flight tests in them. Since we cannot do both training and testing, we do prefer to refer pilots to a number of screened Preferred Instructors that we have identified for initial training, and then to perform the Practical Test at the end of training. Our Examiner is pleased to have been selected by Courtesy Aircraft in Rockford Illinois as their preferred Designated Examiner, and we look forward to continuing that relationship. References are available from pilot/owners as well as Instructors with whom we have worked, and we look forward to serving your T-28 Examination needs.
